A case report of acute pancreatitis with pregnancy.

Synopsis A 33-year -old healthy pregnant woman, gravida 3, para 3, was admitted to a nearby hospital because of the onset of labor pains during the 41st week of pregnancy.<BR>Suddenly, she complained of an acute epigastric pain while straining during the second stage of labor and was delivered by vacuum extraction. As the epigastric pain was severe and continued, she was admitted to our hospital. The serum amylase value was 871 U/1 and abdominal computed tomography demonstrated swelling in the pancreas. Acute pancreatitis was diagnosed. Recovery was uneventful, and she was discharged 19 days after admission.<BR>Pregnancy may be causative in the development of acute pancreatitis. In this case, increased intraabdominal pressure resulting from the enlarged uterus and straining during the second stage of labor might have been among the factors causing acute pancreatitis.
