The incidence of fetal breathing movements (FBM) has been known to decrease a few days before delivery. Taking advantage of this phenomena, we assessed the presence or adsence of the fetal breathing movements in relation with the prediction of the time of delivery in twenty-seven patients in near-term who have admitted for irregular uterine contractions. FBM was present in 13 patients, and only two were delivered within 48 hours after the ultrasonographic examination. FBM were adsent in 14 patients of whom twelve patients were delivered. The sensitivity, specificity, false positive rate and false negative rate of the test was 73%, 83%, 15%, and 29%, respectively. By shortening of the observation time from 30 minutes to 20 and 10 minutes, the sensitivity fell to 53%, 33%, and false negative rate increased up to 41 %, 48%, respectively. We conclude that the presence of FBM has the predictive value in the diagnosis of labor in term-patients.
