It has been reported that in hypoxic conditions fetal breathing movement (FBM) is decreased with simultaneous elevation of the plasma level of catecholamines and arginine vasopressin (AVP). Although some kinds of catecholamines are reported to inhibit FBM, the effects of AVP on FBM are not known. The present study was undertaken to elucidate whether or not AVP has an inhibitory effect on FBM and electrocortical activities in chronically instrumented fetal lambs. AVP was given slowly to the fetus via the extenal jugular vein over a 30 minute period in a different infusion dose, i.e. 1.7±0.4 mIU/ min/kg body weight in the low-dose group and 8.7±2.7 mIU/min/kg body weight in the high-dose group, respectively. The low-dose infusion caused a persistent decrease in fetal heart rate, and increased the fetal arterial pressure during the periods of 30 minutes. The similar effect was observed in the high-dose group. There were no significant differences in arterial pH, Pa02, PaCO2, base excess and hematocrit before and during infusion in both groups except that Pa02 increased from 20.1±1.9 mmHg to 23.7±2.4 mmHg, and Pa02 decreased from 46.8±3.5 mmHg to 43.3±2.9 mmHg only in the high-dose group.<BR>The low-dose infusion as well as high-dose infusion of AVP significantly decreased FBM from 35.2± 14.8% to 17.2±12.2% (p< 0.05), and 34.4 ± 16.7% to 10.7±8.9% (p< 0.01) before and during infusion, respectively. However, there were no significant differences in the incidence of LVF activity before and during infusion of AVP regardless the dose of infusion. The present results indicate that there is a dissociaton between FBM and electrocortical activity during infusion of AVP.
