A case of unilateral multicystic kidney which was diagnosed prenatally by ultrasonography.

Recent advances in ultrasoundsonography (US) have resulted in an increase in the number of reports of prenatal diagnosis of fetal kidney malformations. A case of congenital unilateral multicystic kidney detected by prenatal US is presented.<BR>A 36-year-old, gravida 2, para 2, was referred for US in the 31st week on routine examination of fetus and placenta. Several sized multicystic echo free space were found at the side of the fetal left kidney. The right kidney showed a normal appearance and the volume of the amniotic fluid was within normal limits. The repeated biweekly US assesment revealed that the kidney and the amniotic fluid had not changed is size and in volume. The past history and family history were noncontributory.<BR>A girl of 2896 grams was delivered transvaginally in the 38th week. The Apgar score at one minute was 10. The baby was discharged in good health at the age of 6 days and followed up for 6 months nonsurgically continuing in good health.
