A case report of myotonic dystrophy with ileus caused by uterine myoma and elongation of sigmoid colon.

Although peripheral muscle weakness, along with involvement of respiratory, cardiac and smooth muscle and especially dysphagia in association with myotonic dystrophy are well known, large bowel involvement has rarely been reported and only two cases of elongation of the sigmoid colon have been cited in the Japanese literature.<BR>Our patient, a 43-year-old female with uterine myoma, was hospitalized for myotonic dystrophy and acute abdominal distention. Radiological studies revealed marked dilatation and elongation of the sigmoid colon. She did not respond to conservative treatment. Abdominal total hysterectomy was done under spinal and epidural anesthesia. During surgery, no necrotic or stenotic portions of the sigmoid colon were seen, so resection was not done.<BR>There was no muscle rigidity or recurrence of ileus during the postoperative course.
