Women are more likely to have mental disorders following delivery compared to any other times in their lives. We examined the incidence of postpartum mental disorders among the women who delivered in our clinic, from January 1981 to October 1986. We had 2926 deliveries during this time and 8 patients, 0.27%, suffered from postpartum mental disorders.<BR>The disorders was classified into four groups of neurosis, manic-depressive psychosis, schizophrenia and atypical psychosis, and three patients in neurosis, three in manic-depressive psychosis (one in manic and two in depressive) and two in schizophrenia were included. Five patients were in their twenties and the other three were in their teens, thirties and forties, respectively. All patients were primiparas. As to the prognosis, 5 patients were completely remitted, three were still under presently treatment and one committed suicide. A hereditory factor was found in one patient with neurosis and some causative factors including the mental and circumstential, were suggested in four patients.
