Primary ovarian carcinoid tumors are uncommon, especially trabecular carcinoid is very rare.
One case of primary ovarian trabecular carcinoid tumor is reported.
The patient was a 41-year-old woman, and her chief complaint was abnormal genital bleeding. Physical examination revealed a hen egg sized elastic hard tumor behind the normal sized uterus. This tumor grew rapidly to a newborn's head size. The tumor was suspected to be malignant, so a laparotomy was done. Histologically the tumor was diagnosed as primary ovarian trabecular carcinoid with mature cystic teratoma. No tumor cells stained with either Masson-Fontana argentaffin staining or Grimelius argyrophil staining. However many tumor cells were stained with an immunohistochemical technique using an antiserum against neuron-specific enolase (NSE). Also by using an immunohistochemical technique, tumor cells which contain glucagon and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) were noted. Ultrastructural study revealed the presence of numerous neurosecretory-like granules within the cytoplasm.
The patient was treated by total hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, she is still well and disease-free.
