The postoperative analgesic effect of intrathecal morphine was studied in 150 patients, in relation to the dose, effect and side effects. The analgesic effect was satisfactory with no significant difference in doses between 0.07mg and 0.2mg. To study of the most clinically important side effect, respiratory depression, an intraarterial catheter was used to measure PaO2 every 2 hours for about 24 hours after the injection of morphine. In the usual dose, 0.1-0.2mg, respiration was sometimes depressed. Respiratory depression occurred from 4 to 8 hours after the intrathecal injection of morphine and lasted about 24 hours. It was relieved by 02 therapy as usual.
