Statistical Analysis of Obstetrical Backgrounds in Retrolental Fibroplasia

In an attempt to assess obstetrical backgrounds related to development of the newborn retinopathy, an ophthalmologic examination on the fundus occuli was undertaken with 142 newborns among 269 alive low birth weight infants weighing less than 2500g, who were delivered at the Wakayama Red Cross Hospital from January 1, 1976 through December 31, 1978. Retinopathy developed in 36 out of these cases (Type I: stage 1, 10 cases; stage 2, 10 cases; stage 3, 15 cases; Mixed Type: 1 case), giving an incidence of 25.4%. Statistical analyses on obstetrical backgrounds of Retrolental Fibroplasia (RLF) in the 142 cases have shown that the development of RLF was positively correlated with birth weight, gestational age, respiratory distress or cyanosis, poor weight gain after birth and exposure to oxygen. Most of severe cases were found in AFD infants before 34 weeks gestation with birth weight under 2000g. A remarkable difference was pointed out statistically in the incidence of RLF between the cases with and without oxygenation (χ2: p<0.01).
