A Histogenetic Study of a Brenner Tumor Based on the Observation of Serial Sections

Origin of Brenner tumor, which is benign and infrequently observed in menopausal women, still remains controversial. Recently we obtained a specimen which contained various tumors at every stage of development, from an initial small nest to the typical large Brenner tumor, Moreover, it also had mucinous cystadenoma. With some serial sections of these tumors, we tried to study a histogenetic aspect of the tumor. Based on the present observations, it is considered that origin of Brenner tumor is ovarian surface epithelium, namely the coelomic epithelium. It is also assumed that Walthard-Akagi cell islet, which is widely accepted in recent years as the origin of Brenner tumor and considered to be the embryonic rest of Mullerian duct, is derived from the coelomic epithelium
