Experimental and Clinical Studies on the Intramusclar Injection of Ampicillin Aqueous Suspension

Studies on the aqueous suspension of ampicillin trihydrate (AB-PC sol), a new ampicillin formulation for intramuscular injection were carried out comparatively with sodium ampicillin solutions (AB-PC Na) in our clinics. The serum and urinary levels were determined by cross over method, following the intramuscular administration of 1, 000mg of each drugs. AB-PC sol was proved to maintain the effective levels in blood and urine significantly longer than AB-PC Na, though the maximum activity was higher with AB-PC Na. AB-PC sol was effective in 25 cases of 30 patients with urinary tract, wound and pelvic infections. In 2 Cases, drug eruptions occured. One complained of induration at injected site. No other complications or reactions were noted in these cases.
