The purpose of this study was to investigate whether oxidative stress and biological antioxidant potency were associated with plasma biochemical markers and lifestyle in 42 healthy people (10 men and 32 women) . The level of reactive oxygen metabolites species (ROMs) and biological antioxidant potency (BAP) was measured using a portable apparatus (Free Radical Analytical System 4: FRAS4), as markers of oxidative stress and antioxidation, respectively.<BR>The characteristics of the subjects and their lifestyle were assessed by a questionnaire, and blood samples were collected from their fingertips. Mean value of d-ROMs in women was significantly higher than in men. The BAP in drinkers was significantly lower than that in non-drinkers. The BAP was negatively correlated with fasting plasma glucose in women (r=-0.365, p<0.05), and with y -GTP in men (r=-0.675, p<0.05), however, no significant correlation was observed in d-ROMs. In conclusion, these results suggest a possibility that the BAP evaluated by FRAS4 could reflect the metabolic disorder in an early stage. The future research is required to examine this possibility and sex difference of d-ROMs in sufficient sample.
