Arthroscopic examination for the canine stifle joint was investigated in 14 normal beagle dogs using a 2.7 mm rigid scope for the human shoulder joint. In 3 other dogs, experimental resection of the anterior cruciate ligament was made by the arthroscope. Medial meniscus as well as anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments were clearly observed in all the joints examined. Other components of the joint such as the lateral and medial femoral condyles, long digital extensor tendon and synovial membrane were also clearly observed. Abnormalities in the medial meniscus secondary to the resection of the anterior cruciate ligament, including transverse tear in the free border and instability of the caudal horn, were also clearly demonstrated. Based on these results, the arthroscopic examination is considered to be useful and practically applicable to evaluate the canine stifle joint disorders.
