This paper discusses a proposal for the drug information demanded of Japanese pharmaceutical firms. In particular, package insert information is subject to limitations in the amount of information that can be conveyed due to the limited space available on standard forms. For this reason, there may be cases in which insufficient information is conveyed to users. In the provision of information by computer, it is desirable for maintenance of the information to be carried out at the data source, that is at pharmaceutical firms, and for there to be a system under which the updated data can be provided to a central database. To obtain the latest information, users would search the database. There is a need to establish this kind of system. The implementation of such a system would require that the drug information provided by pharmaceutical firms be regularized at the data source. However, careful consideration will have to be given to problems such as the safety and validity of all information.
