The behaviors of nitrogen oxides in air under the dark reaction in the presence of NH<SUB>3</SUB> were studied at room temperature. N<SUB>2</SUB>O and NO did not react with NH<SUB>3</SUB>in N<SUB>2</SUB>and air. NO<SUB>2</SUB>reacted with NH<SUB>3</SUB>in N<SUB>2</SUB>to produce small amounts of NO and finely powdered white material. The molar ratio (NH<SUB>3</SUB>/NO<SUB>2</SUB>) of the product was found to be 1.0-1.5. The IR spectra of the product showed the similar band with NH<SUB>4</SUB>NO<SUB>3</SUB>and NH<SUB>4</SUB>NO<SUB>2</SUB>. The decreasing rate of NO<SUB>2</SUB>was proportional to the square of [NO<SUB>2</SUB>] and increased remarkably with the increase of [NH<SUB>3</SUB>] and reached to a constant value with excess amounts of NH<SUB>3</SUB>. The oxidation rate of NO in air was not affected by the presence of NH<SUB>3</SUB>. NO<SUB>2</SUB>formed gradually by the oxidation of NO in the early stage, and decreased by the reaction with NH<SUB>3</SUB>in later stage. The decreasing rate did not affect by the presence of O<SUB>2</SUB>but the formation of NO decreased. The formation of NO in the dark reaction in NO<SUB>2</SUB>-NH<SUB>3</SUB>-N<SUB>2</SUB> and NO<SUB>2</SUB>-NH<SUB>3</SUB>-air mixtures increased by the presence of H<SUB>2</SUB>O and the decreasing rate of NO<SUB>2</SUB>decreased a little.
