The melting treatment can achieve the maximum volume and weight reductions, resulting in the longer life of the final disposal site. Furthermore, the environmental safety and stability of the final product, slag, allows us to recycle it for various usages.<BR>Melting characteristics of waste have considerable effects on the melting capabilities. Therefore, the estimation of the melting characteristics is very important to optimize the design and operation of the melting treatment system. A new experimental method to estimate the melting characteristics is proposed.<BR>The ash components of waste and operation temperature governs the melting capabilities. Results of this study indicate that, for the melting treatment, the optimal range of basicity expressed by the ratio of CaO to SiO<SUB>2</SUB> contained in the ash contents is 0.5-1.5 and melting capability becomes high as the contents of basic oxides, e.g., Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>, increase.
