The researchers proposed the kinetic equations which make it possible to analyze mathematically and kinetically the purification mechanisms of the activated sludge process and to operate it efficiently. However, the influence of environmental factors affecting the kinetic equations have not been studied sufficiently. The temperature is one of these factors.
The continuous experiments of the activated sludge process were excuted at 10 to 40°C, the temperature effects on the first order kinetic equation parameters were examined, and the following conclusion were got.
At is (mean residence time of activated sludge) 2 to 10days, the temperature effects on the kinetic equation parameters is extremely insignificant. At is 0.125 to 1day, the following was observed. When the temperature is 20 to 40°C, the activated energy of the Arrhenius equation, which indicates temperature effect on the parameters, is found to be 9, 860ca1/mol for the substrate removal rate constant and to be 7, 530cal/mol for the endogenous decay coefficient. But the yield coefficient is almost constant, less affected by the temperature. And at 10°C, the parameter value changes as ts is reduced. The temperature effects seem to be significant.
