The activated carbon of paper factory waste was examined the ability adsorbing thiocyanate ion in water. The carbon is byproduced in SCP (Semi chemical pulp) process and thrown away as a waste. It did not almost adsorb thiocyanateion, but, it could adsorb the ion when iron (III) ion was as a coadsorbate. The concentration of thiocyanate ion decreased from 10 mg /l to 0.5 mg /l by adsorption on the carbon of 2 g /l-aq. in the solution containing 40 to 80 mg /l iron (Ill) ion at pH 2.5. As coadsorbate, iron (III) sulfate was most effective, and it' s 40 mg /l was as effective as iron (III) chloride or nitrate of 80 mg /l in the solution mentioned above. And, iron (III) ion had same effect on the adsorption in the solution including it's 80 mg /l or more whatever the precursor was. The adsorption cannot be expected at pH above 3.0, because of the solubility of iron (III) ion. The adsorption test was carried at pH 2.5. The thiocyanate ion which had adsorbed on the carbon did not elute from the carbon at higher pH. These results show that thiocyanate ion in a swage can be dealt with by the carbon of paper factory waste with iron (III) ion as a coadsorbate.
