The importance of nerve preservation in neck dissection for better quality of postoperative life of patients has been emphasized. However, the functional mechanisms of cervical nerves are still unclear. In the present study, we examined motor function of cervical nerves in 23 patients during surgery using an electric nerve stimulating system. We also analyzed the sensory function of shoulder skin in 19 patients one month after surgery and in 28 patients more than one year after surgery. The results indicated that intraoperative stimulation of accessory nerves induced contraction of the trapezius muscle while the stimulation of cervical nerves did not in all cases. Kinetic analysis of postoperative sensory function revealed that the cervical nerves mainly act as sensory nerves although small improvement of sensory function was observed in some cases in which the cervical nerves were amputated.
