This study investigated masticatory function of postoperative oral tumor patients who had undergone implant therapy, to clarify the functional level after the treatment and problems that should be overcome in the future. The subjects were postoperative oral tumor patients and non-tumor patients who had been treated with osseointegrated implants in the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, School of Medicine, University of Hannover, or the First Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, School of Dentistry, Showa University. Their masticatory function was evaluated subjectively with Yamamoto's masticatory grade and objectively with the Dental Prescale (Fuji Film Co.) and the low-adhesive, color-developing chewing gum method. The functional level of some postoperative oral tumor patients was almost the same as in normal subjects. Reconstruction of the mandibular continuity was essential for higher rehabilitation in patients who had undergone mandibulectomy. Patients who had resection of the hypoglossal nerve had relatively poor function. The results obtained from the objective methods did not always coincide with the results from the subjective method. The results obtained here indicate that implant therapy must be performed after understanding the significance of the treatment, because the functional results differ from patient to patient.
