The p34cdc-2 kinase functions at cell cycle control points, which are in G1-S and G2-M phase transition. The p53 contributes to metabolically regulated G1 checkpoint. Recently it has become obvious that the interaction between p53 and p34cdc-2 is functional in G1-S phase transition of cell cycle. In this study, p34cdc-2 and p53 were stained immunohistochemically in 15 supraglottic cancers and the significance of simultaneous expression of both markers was studied. Moreover correlation between their expression and DNA ploidy pattern, AgNOR numbers and Clinical Staging were examined. p34cdc-2 and p53 were positive in 80% and 53% of the tumors, respectively. Their simultaneous expression was seen in 33% of the tumors, but the probability was not statistically significant. Correlation between expression of p34cdc-2 or p53 and T, N categories, histological differentiation, AgNOR numbers and DNA ploidy pattern was not significant. However, as the percentage of p34cdc-2 and p53 positive cells in the tumor become high, the tumor tends to show aneuploidy and advance of Clinical Staging. Accordingly it may be that the growth and progression of supraglottic carcinomas are associated with disruption of regulatory system of cell cycle.
