Although the effects of chemotherapy in oral cancer may be assessed by the tumor regression rate, the regression rate and the effects of chemotherapy do not always coincide. Therefore, changes in plasma GST-π levels owing to chemotherapy were divided into an effective group, based on histologic effects, and an ineffective group, and the usefulness of those levels was investigated as a marker for assessing the effects of chemotherapy in oral cancer.1. In the effective group, plasma GST-π levels were relatively low prior to chemotherapy, and decreased significantly more after chemotherapy.2. Compared to the effective group, the ineffective group exhibited higher levels prior to chemotherapy, and did not decrease after chemotherapy. As a result, the changes in plasma GST-π levels were considered to reflect the histologic effects of chemotherapy in oral cancer, and were regarded as useful in assessing those effects.
