This research investigates the treatment performances of coconut shell charcoal (CSC) in batch mode for the removal of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) from contaminated wastewater. Surface modification of CSC with TiO2, HNO3 and/or NaOH was undertaken to improve its removal performance for target compound. The effects of dose and pH for 4-CP removal were evaluated and statistically compared. With an initial 4-CP concentration of 10 mg/L, under optimized conditions (9 g/L of dose, pH 2.0, agitation speed: 150 rpm, contact time: 60 minutes), the NaOH-treated CSC has demonstrated a substantially higher 4-CP removal (88 %) than those treated with HNO3 (65 %) or coated with Ti02 (72 %) (<I>p</I>≤0.05, Anova test) . These results indicate that the surface chemistry of the adsorbent played major roles in the removal of 4-CP through electrostatic interactions.
