New development of inorganic ion exchanger: Synthesis and Ion Exchange Properties of Magnesium-Iron (III) and -Aluminum hydrotalcite like compounds

An attempt of synthesis of magnesium-iron (III) hydrotalcite like compound (Fe-Mg-HT) was carried out by adding aqueous ammonia to a HCl acidic mixture of MgCl<SUB>2</SUB> and FeCl<SUB>3</SUB> solution with different molar ratios of Fe: Mg at 30°C, then aged over night and dried in air after washed with water. The magnesium-aluminum hydrotalcite like compound (Al-Mg-HT) was also carried out by adding a NaOH solution containing Na<SUB>2</SUB>CO<SUB>3</SUB> to a mixed solution of Mg (NO<SUB>3</SUB>) <SUB>2</SUB> and Al (NO<SUB>3</SUB>) <SUB>3</SUB>. The dried samples were conditioned with 1 M (M = mol/dm<SUP>3</SUP>) NaCl solution into column in order convert in Cl<SUP>-</SUP> form.<BR>Both of HT obtained has a layered structure in a range of molar ratios of Fe: Mg or Al: Mg= 2: 8-4: 6 and showed ion exchange properties for NO<SUB>3</SUB><SUP>-</SUP>, Br<SUP>-</SUP> and I<SUP>-</SUP>. The selectivity order of both HT showed NO<SUB>3</SUB><SUP>-</SUP> > Br<SUP>-</SUP> > I<SUP>-</SUP> in a NaCl solution.
