The thiocarbonyl compounds [1]- [11] were found to be effective as corrosion inhibitors in acidic media.<BR>The mo st effective compound was 2-mercaptobenzimidazole which showed 92.1 % and 100%inhibitive effect at the concentration of 32 and 250 ppm, respectively.<BR>The effect of these compounds was found to be due to t he formation of an insoluble chelate film on the copper surface. The structure of the chelate taken from the film was identified by the comparison of its IR and FIR spectra with those of the authentic samples prepared directly from CuCl<SUB>2</SUB> (or CuSO<SUB>4</SUB>) and the compounds [1]- [11].<BR>In FIR spectra of these compounds, the characteristic absorp tion bands considered to be due to γ( Cu-ligand) and γ(Cu-C1) were observed in the range of 245-280 and 300-530 cm<SUP>-1</SUP>, respectively.
