Since 1980, an oxygen-deficient water mass has been observed at the innermost western region of Ariake Bay during the summer months. A team of scientists, including the author, was commissioned by the Ministry of the Environment to determine the cause of this phenomenon. An oxygen-deficient water mass, with less than 2mg L-1 of DO concentration, was observed in August 2001 at the center of Isahaya Bay in Ariake Bay, and we examined sediment core samples from five stations in the innermost region of Ariake Bay. Our experimental results showed that the DO consumption rates of the sediments at stations where the muddy bivalve Scapharca subcrenata lived were more than double compared to those at other stations without the bivalves. This suggests that the respiration of the muddy bivalves possibly contributes to the formation of the oxygen-deficient water mass in shallow seas of this area.
