Eight cases with tumors metastatic to the oral cavity are presented. The patients consisted of six men and two women, whose mean age was 51.8. The primary sites of the tumors were 2 each of lung and kidney, and 1 each of femur, gallbladder, liver, and pelvis. The locations of the metastases were 5 in the mandible, 2 in the maxilla, and 1 in the lower gingiva. In 3 of these cases, the primary tumor was not detected until after diagnosis of the oral metastasis. The most common clinical appearance of a metastatic lesion was a well-demarcated, elastic soft swelling, and five cases had paresthesia in the lower or upper lip. Three of the 8 cases underwent surgicalresection of the oral metastatic lesion, although two of them had metastases at other sites. Oral function of the 3 patients was improved without local recurrence by the treatment, and one of them was alive, with a burden of pulmonary metastases, 4 years after the surgery. Seven cases died of tumor progression, and their mean survival time was 6.9 months after detection of the oral lesions. These results suggested that surgical management of metastatic tumor in the oral cavity was significant for oral function and quality of life.
