Frey's Syndrome is a clinical condition, the symptoms of which are gustatory sweating, redness and a burning sensation of the skin in the area innervated by the auriculo-temporal nerve. This syndrome usually occurs after a surgical operation or a traumatic injury to the parotid gland.
A case of gustatory sweating in the submandibular region following functional neck dissection is reported in this paper.A 57-year-old man was referred for the treatment of tongue cancer (T1N1M0). After pre-operative electron-irradiation therapy (47Gy), functional neck dissection preserved the accessory nerve and internal jugular vein, and partial resection of the tongue and mouth floor were performed.
The skin flaps were sutured layer to layer, and the intra-oral defect was primarily closed. The postoperative course was uneventful, and there has been no local recurrence or distant metastasis in the 45 months since the operation.
However, 15 months after the operation the patient complained of gustatory sweating in an area of the submandibular skin measuring 4X2cm as confirmed by the Minor test.
The only symptom was sweating occuring after mastication of more than 5 minutes.Because the patient experienced no serious difficulties with this condition, no further treatment to eliminate the sweating was performed. The degree and extent of gustatory sweating did not change 39 weeks postoperatively.
