The growth of the rice plant affected by the downey mildew declined generally, though T-R ratio and width of leaf-brade of the diseased plant were more excellent than those of healthy one. The time of heading of diseased plants were delayed considerably.
Contents of chlorophyll a and b of the diseased plants were higher than those of healthy ones at young stage, but decreased remarkably at adult stage, being lower than those of the latter.
The content of reducing sugar was in parallel with that of chlorophyll, while the contents of non-reducing sugar, total sugar and starch bore no relation with that, being always more in the healthy plants than the diseased ones. It may be due to the prevention of synthetic process to sucrose and starch from glucose in the latter.
Water and nitrogen contents of the diseased plants were always higher than those of healthy ones, which seemed to bring about less resistance for other diseases and pests.
It was suggested that on the diseased plants the active centre of metabolism was still located at lower position of leaves.
