A case of acute myelogenous leukemia, complicated with Bacillus cereus septicemia

A 26-year-old male was admitted to Itabashi Nihon Univ. Hosp., with the diagnosis of acute myelogenous leukemia. Soon after the admission he was started to have antileukemic chemotherapy with Daunomycin, Cy. arabinoside, 6-MP and Predonine.<BR>On the twentieth hospital day, he was noticed to have high fever, 39°C, and continued to have high fever for nine days. On the first, third and fifth day of fever, venous blood were drawn and cultivated Bacillus cereus. Bacillus cereus was also cultivated from pharyngeal swab.<BR>He became afebrile by chemotherapy of GM, CER and LCM, but died on the forty-eight hospital day with complication of hemorrhagic diathesis.<BR>The isolated Bacillus was compared with Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633, biologically.
