In the past two decades, there has been a growing consensus that international relations theories must pay due attention to the process and institutions of domestic politics. The purpose of this paper is to summarize and evaluate the emerging literature that attempts to link the international system and domestic politics. The direction of recent research can be divided into two categories. The so-called "Second Image Reversed" perspective focuses on the domestic consequences of international phenomenon. The "Second Image" perspective, on the other hand, deals with the international consequences of domestic institutions and domestic political process. In my view, the latter is particularly promising for the future development of international relations theories because it has been successful in incorporating innovative insights of informational economics, formalizing the arguments, exploring the microfoundations of individual political actors, and presenting itself as a framework for both international cooperation and international conflicts.
