To evaluate objectively the status of the esophageal varices, we adopted endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) and endoscopic color doppler ultrasonography (ECDUS) as well as ordinal endoscopy. EUS with a miniature probe enabled us to provide more detailed inf ormations under the mucosa, such as the diameter of the varices, the number of perforated vein and the existence of cardia varices, and ECDUS was also useful to reveal flow velocity of the varices. Twenty patients with varices were classified by F categories into F2 and F3 groups from initial endoscopic findings and EUS/ECDUS examination was carried out to all of them. There were significant differences in the diameter of the varices, flow velocity, and the number of perforated veins between F2 and F3 groups. Eight out of thirteen (61.5%) of F2 patients and all the seven F3 patients had cardia varices (Lg-c). Diameters of Lg-c were significantly thicker in F3 patients than that of F2, whereas the number of Lg-c was significantly smaller in F3 than F2. Diameters of varices were statistically correlated with their flow velocity and flow volume. It was suggested that the prediction of the flow velocity and flow volume of the varices might be possible by simply checking their diameters by EUS.
