Characteristics of cesarean deliveries in Hyogo prefecture.

A statistical survey concerning cesarean deliveries performed during the year of 1997 in obstetrical facilities of Hyogo prefecture was carried out. A questionnaire was sent to 98 obstetrical facilities which seemed to have more than 250 deliveries a year, and 72 facilities responded to it. The number of cesarean deliveries during this period was 4652 among total deliveries of 34152, and the cesarean section rate was 13.6%. The cesarean section rate seemed to be higher in facilities with more than 5 obstetricians, or in ones with NICU. The most frequent indication for cesarean section was previous cesarean section, followed by breech presentation and CPD. The mean cesarean section rates of all facilities for patients with previous cesarean section, breech presentation and multiple pregnancy were 84.5%, 78.1% and 55.9%, respectively. However, there were great differences among the facilities in the rates of cesarean section based on previous cesarean section or breech presentation.
