We studied 1150 women with singleton pregnancies who underwent mid-trimester amniocentesis in Hyogo Medical College Hospital since 1979 in co-operation with the section of clinical genetics. The annual number of the test has doubled during recent five years according to an increase of relative ratio of women 35 years of age older to the total gravidas. As a result, twenty-one chromosomal abnormalities were detected by the amniocentesis, yielding the detection rate of 2.5%. As maternal age advanced, the risk of fetal chromosomal anomalies, such as Down's syndrome, increased. It would be necessary to develop an effective screening method to detect pregnant women at risk of having chromosomal abnormalities before offering amniocentesis to all the patients, because the number of elderly gravidas who are candidates for amniocentesis at present will dramatically increase in the near future.
