A case of tuberculosis of the uterine cervix.

With the present decline in tuberculosis, genital tuberculosis has become rare. The macroscopic appearance of cervical tuberculosis is similar to that of cervical cancer, and the rate of misdiagnosis is reported to be high. We present a recent case of cervical tuberculosis, together with a review of the literature.<BR>A 42-year-old multipara with no past history of tuberculosis presented with chief complaint of fever and lower abdominal pain. On pelvic examination, a fragile round swelling of 1.5 cm diameter was noted on the cervix, and hard resistence was palpable from the left parametrium to the pelvic wall. These findings were consistent with cervical cancer. Histological examination of a biopsy specimen taken from the cervix demonstrated granulomas containing epithelioid cells and Langhans giant cells, and the diagnosis of tuberculosis was made. Total abdominal hysterectomy and resection of the bilateral swollen obturator lymph nodes were performed. Pathological examination of the cervix and body of the uterus, and the bilateral obturator lymph nodes of the extirpated specimen revealed the same findings as in the cervical biopsy, and the most marked findings were in the cervix. Postoperative systemic examination revealed no tuberculous lesions in other organs. The patient was treated with antituberculous chemotherapy consisting of oral INH, RFP and EB for ten months, and her clinical course has been uneventful.
