Diagnosis and clinical features of ectopic pregnancy. Evaluation of 67 cases.

Ectopic pregnancy is one of the commonest diseases encountered in obstetric and Gynecologic emergencies. In the past two years (1984-1985), sixty seven cases of ectopic pregnancy were diagnosed and treated at the Kobe Central Municipal Hospital. Sixty six patients were surgically treated and the remaining one was managed conservatively with MTX therapy. Besides clinical examination, immunological assay of urine HCG, ultrasonography, Douglas puncture, hysterosalpinography, hysteroscopy and laparoscopy were applied stepwise as adjuncts when necessary to confirm the diagnosis. Ultrasonography and laparoscopy are found to be the most useful diagnostic aids. The latter enables direct visualisation of the pelvic viscera without undertaking laparotomy and is especially useful in the investigation of chronic and mild type of ectopic pregnancy. This paper discusses the usefulness of our diagnostic procedure and the clinical features of ectopic pregnancy.
