Activities of N-acetyl-beta -glucosaminidase (E. C. 3.2.1. 30;NAG), a typical lysosomal marker, in the human maternal plasma obtained from 149 normal pregnancies were measured.NAG activities elevated 1.5 to 7 folds in pregnant women with advancing gestation from 5 to 40 weeks. After the onset of labour, the activities in the plasma rapidly increased, and after parturition rapidly fell. These findings suggest that NAG is released from uteroplacental lysosomes, and also indicate that the lysosomes participate in the parturition. In other words, the release of lysosomal enzymes may be one of triggers in initiating labour.Stromal tissues including the endometrial stroma contain large amount of glycosaminoglycans to which NAG is active. It is possible to estimate that NAG plays a role in the placental growth and in the ripening of uterine cervix by degrading the uterine stromal ground substances in the endometrium and in the cervix.
