The usefulness of continuous intravenous infusion of a combination mixture with 500 ml 10% guaifenesin solution, 2g ketamine and 500mg xylazine was studied in 9 thoroughbred racing horses in comparison with isoflurane anesthesia. The types of surgery performed in this study were bone fragment removal (n=3), hematoma removal (n=3) and castration (n=3) . The horses were premedicated with atropine and xylazine. Anesthesia was induced with ketamine. The median duration of infusion was 58.3 min and the median infusion rate was 1.23 ml/kg/hr. Depth of anesthesia was monitored by palpebral reflexes, nystagmus and swallowing retlex. Arterial blood pressure and heart rate were significantly higher, while PaO2 was significantly lower in the infusion group than in the isoflurane-anesthetized group. All horses recovered uneventfully without any postsurgical lameness. In conclusion, infusion of this combination is a useful anesthetic technique even for thoroughbred racing horses, provided that plenty of oxygen is given.
