Estrus synchronization was attempted with weaned sows in such a manner that the sows in lactation were kept fed ad libitum since the 7th day after farrowing up until weaning so as to prevent the otherwise possible delay of estrus recurrences due to body weight loss by lactation and to control the period of their lactation in order to have several sows wean on the same day, but with eventually varying periods of lactation. Except for the lactation period, sows were fed the formula feed in a daily amount of 1.4kg along with 1.2kg of grained oats.1. In the initial phase study (from July 1975 up until June 1976), 49 groups (with weaning of 2-5 sows on the same day) comprising 135 sows in total were weaned, mainly at age of 5 weeks after farrowing, but ranging from 17 days up to 45 days. Estrus was exhibited within 10 days in 90%, or within 12 days in 94% of the sows. The mean of the interval between the weaning and recurred estrus was 5.54±1.53 days except for the 9 sows (6%) that failed to show estrus before the particular period of 12 days.Of the 49 groups, 7 groups (8 sows) exhibited their belated estrus, i. e. non-estrus until 12 days after weaning, while 3 groups (3 sows) manufested feeble estrus and one group (one sow) anestrus. Consequently, 39 groups (77.6% by number of groups) i. e. 123 sows (91.1% by individual number), succeeded in exhibiting synchronized estrus.Of the total 134 sows subjected to mating, 123 conceived, which represented a conception rate as good as 91.8%.2. In the second phase study (from July 1976 up to January 1978), 74 groups (with weaning of 2-6 sows on the same day) comprising 234 sows in total were weaned, mainly at age of 4 weeks after farrowing, but ranging from 23 up to 43 days. The sows which did not exhibit estrus by 7 days after weaning received intramuscular injection of 1, 000IU of PMSG.Estrus was exhibited within 10 days in 94%, or within 12 days in 95% of the sows. The mean of the interval between the weaning and recurred estrus was 5.78±1.40 days except for the 12 sows (4.8%) that failed to show estrus before the particular period of 12 days.Of the 18 sows receiving PMSG, only 8 sows exhibited estrus in 2-5 days after the injection (9-12 days after weaning). Of the 74 groups, 10 groups (10 sows) exhibited their belated estrus, i. e. non-estrus until 12 days after weaning, while 2 groups (2 sows) manifested feeble estrus and 2 other groups (2 sows) anestrus. Consequently, 60 groups (81% by number of groups), i. e. 220 sows (94% by individual number) succeeded in exhibiting synchronized estrus.Of the total 244 sows subjected to mating, 223 conceived, which represented a concption rate as good as 91.4%.
