A sulfur denitrification combined with sulfate reduction process was developed in the two phase upflow biofilm method. Sulfate reduction occurred in the first column. In the second column where nitrate was added assuming recycling from nitrification column, both sulfur denitrification and heterotrophic denitrification occurred simultaneously. Sulfate reducing activity was detected in the second column. Sulfate reducing bacteria grew in both columns playing an important role in production of acetate from protein. Sulfur denitirification bacteria stoichiometrically utilized sulfide produced by sulfate reducing bacteria. Heterotrophic denitrification bacteria stoichiometrically utilized acetate produced by sulfate reducing bacteria. The biomass growth rate was very low and excess sludge was not produced during 50 day operation. Ecological interactions were estimated in the biofilm.
