An investigation was made to asses the adsorption characteristics of the deodorant oxidized peat which was derived by oxidation with 34 vol % nitrogen dioxide, by comparison with soil organic deodorant on the market.<BR>It was found that oxidized peat has a high absorbing power for ammonia, and it showed high adsorptive ability especially in wet conditions.<BR>However, in case of absorption for hydrogen sulfide, its absorptive ability was only 1/3 of soil organic deodorant. It was observed that the impregnation of Fe3+ to oxidized peat at a ratio of 2.4 wt % increased the absorptive ability for hydrogen sulfide to the similar level of soil organic deodorant found on the market.<BR>It was thus found that oxidized peat is very effective as a deodorant for sprinkling onto night-soil, excreta of cattle, sewage, etc.
