High performance gel permeation chromatography—pattern similarity method was adopted for the identification of tar balls sampled at seashore in Japan. At first, chromatograms of sixty-two kinds of crude oils in the world were measured as standard data, and comparing pattern similarities, the oils were classified by a branching tree diagram. There was a close relationship between the countries of origin and thier patterns of chromatograms. The sixty-two crude oils were classified into 28 clusters with due regard to a dispersion of chromatogram for the identification of tar balls. Fouty-nine tar balls mainly sampled at Okinawa, were assigned to the clusters, the 18 tar balls were deduced to be originated from Sumatra Crude, and the 14 tar balls from Middle East Crude.
