Between 1983 and 1999, 14 patients with malignant tumors of the ear were treated in the Department of Otolaryngology, Kagawa Medical University. The primary site was the external auditory canal, in 7 cases, and the middle ear, in 7. The patients were 2 males and 12 females in particular, all of the patients with middle ear tumors were female. Pathological diagnosis was squamous cell carcinoma in 11 patients, adenoid cystic carcinoma in 2, and adenocarcinoma in 1. Six patients with external auditory canal tumors were treated with surgery, and 5 patients underwent preoperative or postoperative radiotherapy. Only one patient was treated with chemo-radiotherapy. Three patients with T1, T2 stage middle ear tumors underwent preoperative radiotherapy and radical mastoidectomy. The five-year survival rate was 51.4% for patients with external auditory canal tumors, and 57.1% for those with middle ear tumors.Early diagnosis, an accepted staging system for treatment, and safer radical surgery are necessary to improve the survival rate.
