The thermodynamical analysis is useful to understand ion exchange processes as a whole and to make clear basic items determining these processes. Regarding to this problem, many efforts have continued to analyze the process mainly under ideal conditions. These investigations are classified into two groups; one is based on the mass action model in which the ion exchange process is treated as ion exchange reaction and another is based on the phase equilibrium model in which the ion exchange phenomena is essentially treated as the equilibrium process between an external solution and an ion exchanger. In this article, characteristic points of these models and their extension are described.
