In September 2004, six of 505 piglets (1-2 months old) on a farm with 400 sows showed severe neurological disorders; one of them died. Histological examination of the six clinically affected piglets revealed lesions limited to the central nervous system (CNS). In addition, non-suppurative encephalomyelitis was observed. The reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction was used to detect the genomes of the porcine teschovirus and the porcine enterovirus from the examined piglets' CNSs.
