In April, 1985, a Holstein cow approximately 3 years old died on a farm in the Matsumoto area after exhibiting chronic pneumonialike symptoms and finally hemoptysis.
Autopsy revealed a goose-egg-sized thrombus in the thoracic caudal vena cava. Multiple abscesses and lobular hemorrhages were seen in the lungs. Histopathologically, the thrombus was replaced by granulation tisssue and attached to the wall of the caudal vena cava. A large quantity ofFusobacterium necrophorumwas isolated purely from the thrombus and pulmonary absecsses.
