In the Soya district of Hokkaido 24 dairy cows were infected with listeriosis during a period from May, 1973, to September, 1976. They were mostly more than 3 years old and manifested nervous symptoms of encephalitis as main signs. The disease was prevalent in May and June.
When fecal samples were collected from 1, 645 apparently healthy dairy cows and 111samples from silage on 170 farms in the district, Listeria organisms were isolated from 1.4% of the cows, 9.4% of the farms, and 2.7% of the silage samples.
These results indicated that listeriosis had been spread extensively in the district and that the etiologicalagent was always in the feces of apparently healthy cows and silage and ready to cause the disease in relation to environmental conditions and factors on the side of cows
