Dairy cows showing a milk fat rate of less than 2.5% were significantly lower in the pH of the gastric juice, intraruminal protozoal count, and the crude fiber rate of the diet than normal control cows. When they were fed roughage of good quality and concentrates of different kinds, they presented a particularly distinct improvement of the acetic acid/propionic acid ratio of the gastric juice, which led to an increase in milk fat rate.
