A preparation of Marek's disease vaccine (Deptavac-HVT) was tested for safety and immunogenicity. A total of 2, 000-2, 100 chickens in each of five poultry farms were inoculated with 1, 000 PFU per capita of this vaccine by the intraperitoneal or subcutaneous route and held under observation for 180 days On each farm 894-1, 050 chickens served as controls.
The rate of death and condemnation was 3.3-9.8% in the inoculated group and 9.1-23.0% in the control group. Tumor was found macroscopically in 117 inoculated birds and 348 control ones. The histological diagnosis of Marek's disease was made on 116 inoculated and 355 control chickens. The number of birds infected was reduced by 77.1-87.6%(84.0% on the average) in the inoculated group, as compared with the control group.
Vaccine virus was detected from 85.7-100% of the chickens of the inoculated group for 30-180 days. Field Marek's disease virus was isolated from all the tested flocks of the control group at 28-30 days of age. Contact infection with vaccine virus was noticed in some birds. Gel precipitation antibody against HVT began to appear at 31-60 days of gae. These results indicate that the tested vaccine is very high in safety and efficacy.
