The skin safety (patch and photopatch tests) of KP-363, a new antifungal benzylamine derivative, was investigated in 30 patients with dermatitis or photodermatosis.
The test preparations were 0.5%, 1.0% and 2.0% creams and solutions of KP-363. Commercial econazole, bifonazole and tolciclate creams and solutions were used as the reference.
In the patch test, positive reactions were seen with 2.0% KP-363 solution, econazole cream and solution and tolciclate cream. The other preparations did not induce positive reactions.
In the photopatch test, positive reactions were not seen with 0.5%, 1.0% and 2.0% KP-363 creams and solutions.
According to the skin irritation index calculated by the method of Sugai, high indices were seen with 45.0 and 60.0 for econazole cream and solution, respectively, while those for the other preparations were below 15.
From the results, 1.0% KP-363 as well as bifonazole and tolciclate creams and solutions have proved to produce only slight irritation.
